welcome to the Born Slippy Logo phenomenon

Born Slippy was first released as a 4 track double 12" promo in late December 1994  / early January 1995.

the proper 'A' side was simply known as 'born slippy'. this was a real techno track - with no vocals, and this was received to much acclaim by the music press, it even made 'single of the week' in mixmag update.

it was the techno version that was to be the official single release on JBO. (Cat. no. JBO029). Also included on the e.p. was a 'Telematic version' of Born Slippy and an import version of Cowgirl (the winjer mix), while the infamous NUXX version of the track was included on the 'B' side of the techno version.

'born slippy' NUXX was a vocal remix (of sorts) of the techno version, although it bears little resemblance to it, and was even accused of sounding like elton john by one journalist! (the pianos...?).

the reaction to both versions was mixed. underground dance music fans loved it, record buyers failed to notice it. 'born slippy' dented the UK charts at number 52 in May 1995, when officially released on 2 separate 12 inches, with NUXX tucked away on the B side of the 1st 12" (this being the infamous lawnmower sleeve 12")

the re-release of 'born slippy' in 1996, however was an entirely different affair and launched underworld to the masses, despite the band themselves not being that bothered with the commercial success of the single, while they were ultimately more interested in concentrating on their artistic merit and underground genre acclaim, jbo were almost forced into a re-release...

when the producers of the cult film 'trainspotting' were compiling the dance orientated soundtrack for the movie in 1996, they included the tucked away 'NUXX' version in the soundtrack, amongst other classics including bedrock's - 'for what you dream of' and iggy pop's - 'lust for life'. it was here that the track really took off...the cult film became popular on both sides of the atlantic.

radio 1 dance music dj pete tong hooked up with the films immediate impact and promptly played the record every week on his essential selection show, claiming that he wouldn't stop until JBO re-released it. he even created it as his single of the week. demand for the track soared, the more tong played the higher the demand. JBO and underworld relented and released the track, in it's original NUXX form with a number of new remix versions of the vocal track. the remixes however failed to take away from the impact of the original NUXX version, and the track received constant national (radio 1) a-list airtime.

'born slippy NUXX', as it was now officially called ,featured a darren price remix of 'born slippy NUXX' and a remix of 'banstyle' from the 'second toughest..' lp by drum 'n' bass star, alex reece. there were a plethora of mixes mostly remixes of remixes on two cd singles, which also included a sought after version of dark train a remix of dark and long, but it was the original NUXX version that was ripping up the dance floors.

'born slippy' second time around looked set to hit the top of the uk charts in july of 1996, but it peaked at number 2, being kept from the top by the fugees massive 'killing me softly', and a gary barlow ballad!

'born slippy' has now become the centre piece of many of underworld's live sets, and although fans of the band have no doubt left behind the 'born slippy' phenomenon, whilst not forgetting it's lyrical content and overall genre impact, there are still many uninitiated music fans whose only knowledge of underworld is through the 'born slippy' track, sadly the chant of lager lager lager can often be heard at football grounds, stag parties, and weddings nowadays...

fact - 'born slippy', like 'sappy's curry' and 'pearl's girl' on the 'second toughest in the infants' lp are names of greyhounds that have run at romford dog track.

born slippy - phenomenon, greyhound and now boat!!! yes a boat....a team of sailors have named their vessel 'born slippy' after the song recorded by underworld...for more details go to bornslippy.com....beware this site is rather dull apart from a page of 'born slippy' lyrics it's all about sailing....

"underworld...who are they?"
"you know 'born slippy'?"
"no"
"yeah you do...lager! lager! lager!"
"oh i love that track..."

that is the 'born slippy' phenomenon....

...it is probably the track that got many fans started in the underworld world...

...remember 'born slippy' may have been a massive track commercially and has gone a long way to helping underworld in establishing themselves as one of the most important dance bands of the late 20th Century, but there is much more to underworld and the band should not be remembered just for this one club friendly epic...

IN 1998 - DANCE MUSIC MAGAZINE DJ , PUBLISHED A LIST OF 'THE HOT 100 - THE BEST CLUB TUNES EVER' - UNDERWORLD'S 'BORN SLIPPY' CAME IN AT A LOWISH NUMBER 43...THIS IS WHAT THEY SAID:

'AS HIP, AS CREDIBLE, AS UNDERGROUND AND AS CRITICALLY APPLAUDED AS UNDERWORLD UNDOUBTEDLY WERE BY 1996 THEY'D STILL ONLY HAD A COUPLE OF MINOR HIT SINGLES. THEY WERE AN ALBUMS BAND: DARK, EXCITING, TECH-STERS WHO PUMPED OUT NON-CHEEZI EUPHORIC SOUNDS WITH ENERGY AND INTELLECT. BUT TO THE MAINSTREAM PUBLIC THEY WERE AN UNKNOWN QUANTITY. THEN CAME TRAINSPOTTING, THE BRITISH FILM SENSATION OF THE YEAR, EQUALLY HIP, EQUALLY CREDIBLE AND EQUALLY CRITICALLY APPLAUDED...BOLSTERED BY A MUSICAL SOUNDTRACK SELECTION THAT WAS MORE ADORED THAN ALL OF TARANTINO'S COLLECTIONS PUT TOGETHER. A RE-MIXED VERSION OF 'BORN SLIPPY' (ACTUALLY THE B-SIDE VERSION OF THE INITIAL RELEASE FROM A YEAR EARLIER) SUDDENLY LURCHED TO NUMBER 2 IN THE CHARTS IN TRAINSPOTTING'S SLIPSTREAM. A DJ AND TWO MEMBERS OF THE EURYTHMICS BACKING BAND WERE SUDDENLY ON THE BIG MAP. SO TOO WAS ROMFORD, ESSEX, AT LEAST FOR SOMETHING OTHER THAN A SUPPOSED PREDILECTION FOR DODGY BLONDES WITH QUESTIONABLE CLOTHING TASTE'.

IN 2001 - MIXMAG COMPILED THEIR OWN 'TOP 100 TUNES' AND THIS IS HOW 'BORN SLIPPY' DID AND WHAT THEY SAID....

MIXMAG MAGAZINE TOP 100 TUNES 2001 - UNDERWORLD - BORN SLIPPY (JUNIOR BOYS OWN, 1995) NUMBER 7

What they said: "Shouting Lager, Lager, Lager.2 it was a chorus taken up by thousands of beer boys. But Underworld hadn't meant it to be taken so literally. The original 'Born Slippy' was a techno instrumental only mix. It was released in 1995 and was single of the week in now defunct dance weekly Mixmag Update. The vocal mix that became so well known appeared as 'Born Slippy Nuxx'. In 1996 the Nuxx version was included in the Brit-flick Trainspotting and as the film took off so did 'Born Slippy Nuxx'. It was put on heavy rotation by Radio 1 and Pete Tong played it on every Essential selection until Junior Boy's Own Agreed to re-release it. It reached number two held from the top by the fugees 'Killing me Softly'. Despite three critically acclaimed albums'Born Slippy' is what Underworld are known for. No Matter. More lager, more shouting. - available on the mixmag cd the Big Tunes! - the greatest dance singles of all time, ringtone also available at http://www.mixmagtunes.com

brown acid - the facts

the brown acid 12" is a bootleg. it was produced in 1999 by some unknown dj...who may or may not be famous (and who may or may not be the Aphex Twin - this is unlikely though)....the track is not the work of Underworld (as far as I am aware) but Underworld's 'born slippy' is used to great effect in the track....along with pink floyd's....'is there anybody out there?'.....sample and other speech snippets including some warnings about a batch of 'brown acid'....this 12" is sometimes referred to as the Born Slippy (pink floyd mix) or Born Slippy (aphex twin mix) ....above is a photo of the label...this is all the information on the track there is...there are two mixes both similar to each other

this 12" can sometime fetch £50 - there are also some bootleg copies of the bootleg - only the original bootlegs have printed labels
